The Crossing is a 15-acre property located within the Town of Buena Vista in the Arkansas River Valley. It represents a crossing of time, place and people over the ages where three of Colorado’s major railways once intersected with a rich mining and agricultural history. The Crossing exists to enhance Buena Vista’s unique vibrant and rich spirit of community. By prioritizing thoughtfully crafted for-sale and for-rent homes attainable for essential workers and existing locals to address Buena Vista’s needs first – knowing that in doing so, everything else will follow. The development will have a range of homes at a variety of prices in partnership with the Chaffee Housing Authority and the Chaffee Housing Trust.
Valerian, working in collaboration with the construction team S2 Builders and SK2 Architecture, is providing the landscape architectural and irrigation design for the development. These include streetscape elements, soft surface trail, open space pocket park with native seeding, shared community spaces with trees and pathways and a large open community green space referred to as the Crossing Green. The Crossing Green includes large shade trees, a shade structure, a mix of sodding and native seeding to minimize water use and “The Chute”. The Chute nods to the former ice chute remnant on site that was used in the 19th century to carry ice to take fresh lettuce to the market and will now be restored as a nature play feature with interpretive signage.
The groundbreaking ceremony was an opportunity to thank the community and partners on the project as well as honoring past BV community members by re-naming the streets to commemorate their long-lasting contributions.
