Big Dry Creek is a perennial stream system that is a tributary to South Platte River. The creek begins in the City of Castle Pines Colorado, where its tributaries drain Daniels Park and undeveloped natural areas before entering a highly urbanized environment within the City of Lone Tree. After flowing through Lone Tree, Big Dry Creek then enters the City of Centennial. Within Centennial, Big Dry Creek passes through South Suburban Golf Course (SSGC) and other open space properties.
In 2020, a multi-disciplinary team was hired by MHFD to design higher functioning and lower maintenance (HFLM) stream improvements for a rapidly degrading reach of Big Dry Creek within South Suburban Golf Course in partnership with SEMSWA and SSPRD. The design team made use of the opportunities available at SSGC in order to implement improvements on over 1,900 LF of channel and replace three pedestrian/golf cart crossings. The resulting project was constructed in the fall of 2024 by Naranjo Civil and has shown immediate improvements on aesthetics, safety, and maintenance needs.
