Natural play and individual exploration are the tenets of the playground design at the Montessori Academy of Colorado. Located in the heart of downtown Denver, the urban setting of MAC provides a unique home to this distinctive play space in which students are able to learn through doing and experience the benefits of structured and unstructured play. In addition to outdoor classrooms for structured learning, landforms, music makers, gardens, boulders, and logs are open to the interpretation and imagination of students. Valerian worked closely with a local artist, Relevant ReUse, on the design and implementation of the music makers, outdoor kitchen and outdoor chalkboard. Valerian provided conceptual design, construction documentation, and construction oversight for the implementation of the Playground at MAC. Design and coordination were completed following extensive research and collaboration with the staff at Montessori Academy. Construction was completed by Early Fall to minimize disruption to student learning.
