Niver Creek Open Space has seen a much-needed transformation with City of Thornton, Adams County Open Space, and Mile High Flood District’s Tributary M project. This project included the underpass at Huron Street where Valerian and ICON Engineering collaborated to provide stream restoration and revegetation to the deeply incised Niver Creek. In addition to the Niver Creek restoration, additional amenities included improved accessibility and activation of the open space. These amenities include a nature play area and the Niver Nature Heritage Trail (NNHT) improvements. Trail nodes include soft surfacing, furnishings and educational signage about local history related to Niver Creek and the flora and fauna specific to the Niver Open Space corridor. The nature play area is adjacent to the NNHT providing safe and easy access for all abilities and includes natural pathways, large boulders and logs for exploration play, and a large, colorful snake sculpture. As a climb-and-play item, the snake promotes collaborative nature-based play and encourages children to use their imagination. It also attracts visitors and provides a memorable, community feature.
