Upstream changes along with several flood events heavily impacted the Otero Tributary Reach 03 area resulting in severe erosion with substantial bank cutting and absence of sedimentation. Water rushed through the area with such force that several banks had significant degradation resulting in safety hazards and instability of the banks. Due to the location of the corridor at the rear of several property lines, the corridor sees a high user rate and is clearly valued, with neighbors having a large vested interest in the improvements. Valerian and the design team utilized several public outreach efforts to develop a restoration plan that realigns the stream, provides bank stabilization and incorporates bioengineering such as soil lifts, naturalized drop structures and strategic revegetation. Great care was taken to preserve established and healthy vegetation whenever possible in order to maintain visual screening. The realignment also accommodates a trail on both sides of the stream, providing ease of access for maintenance and resident use. The rehabilitation of the riparian corridor allows residents of 30+ years to continue to safely enjoy this amenity and restores the balance to a sustainable and resilient ecosystem.
