Westwood Via Verde Trail and Green Infrastructure

As part of a wider neighborhood plan, the Via Verde is a greenway to better connect existing open spaces and neighborhood destinations while also incorporating multi-benefit green infrastructure (GI) to improve water quality, increase tree canopy, and support community empowerment. Valerian and ICON worked to realign and widen existing trails within utility easements to better facilitate multi-modal use and reduce the amount of conflicts at intersections and at-grade crossings. GI improvements were incorporated along Irving Street to treat stormwater runoff. With a goal of reducing water consumption, existing turf was converted to native seed and strategically located pollinator plants were included. Valerian designed a new irrigation system to provide accurate watering to the new native grass landscapes.
