Elk Meadow Stagecoach Trailhead

Part of the Elk Meadow Park, the upper trailhead along Stagecoach Boulevard had outgrown existing visitorship. Valerian and the design team developed a new site plan for the Stagecoach Trailhead that expands parking lot capacity, adds trailhead amenities such as new trail kiosks and vault bathrooms as well as relocating picnic areas. Proposed improvements will also increase ADA access around the entire site and include a ADA accessible picnic area. Given the valued existing conditions of the site, Valerian paid particular attention to situating new amenities into the topography while still preserving as many existing trees as possible and highlighting the beautiful views of the meadows. Balancing the desire to expand the trailhead capacity while providing as reasonable footprint as possible, the design team utilized two types of retaining walls and a carefully engineered stormwater plan to mitigate any flows from the newly paved surface. The new trailhead will also serve Stagecoach South, which underwent a stabilization and restoration plan and has re-opened to the public as a dog friendly on-leash trail system.
